Facts/Status quo (directly quoted from https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/oceans/)
  • The Ocean is intrinsic to our life on earth. Covering three-quarters of the Earth’s surface, contain 97 percent of the Earth’s water, and represent 99 percent of the living space on the planet by volume.
  • The ocean is our planet’s life support and regulate the global climate system. It is the world’s largest ecosystem, home to nearly a million known species and containing vast untapped potential for scientific discovery.
  • ocean absorbs around 23 per cent of annual CO2 emissions generated by human activity
  • Ocean heat is at record levels, causing widespread marine heatwaves. A warmer ocean means:
    • sea level rise, shrinking polar ice caps, marine heat waves, extreme weather events, coastal flooding and erosion, toxic algae, ocean acidification
  • Every year, an estimated 5 to 12 million metric tonnes of plastic enters the ocean
  • About 80% of all tourism takes place in coastal areas
